North of Nha Trang Travel Guide

Running north from Nha Trang to the provincial border with Phu Yen are some of Vietnam's prettiest bays and beaches. There's also a waterfall and some minor tourist attractions cum spectacles, but if you're looking into this part of Khanh Hoa province it's most likely because you're after some serious beach time.  Historic Centre Vietnam 7 days

Many choose to visit these spots by hired motorcycle from Nha Trang town -- the road is good and it's a very scenic ride, so you could do a lot worse than doing your exploring this way.

Leaving from Nha Trang, the first point you'll reach is Ba Ho Falls, at around the 22km mark. Finding the turn off alone is a bit tricky, as it's marked only by two crumbling stone pillars. The road to the falls leads through the small village of Ba Ho, and then along a bumpy road to the parking area and the start of the walk. The falls are more a group of rapids running down through a valley littered with boulders. Admission is 5,000 dong. Unless you've got a fine eye for crumbling stone pillars, you're best to utilise one of the tour agencies in Nha trang, a taxi, or a motorbike guide to reach here. DALAT CULTURE TOUR, EXPLORING BEAUTY IN VIETNAMESE CULTURE AND HISTORY

Next stop is Monkey Island -- a small island that certainly qualifies as a tourist spectacle. "Attractions" include a show with performing animals, a go-karting racetrack and the chance to ride an Ostrich. The company running the tours is Long Phu Tourist Company. The day starts at another island, Thi Island, taking in the 'orchid stream' and 'orchid caves', then some swimming and rowing. After lunch you head to Lao Island (Monkey Island) for the action and adventure awaiting unwitting tourists there. The trip costs 140,000 dong per person, leaving at 08:00 and returning at 15:45. Trips here can be arranged through Long Phu Tourist Company at 84 Hung Vuong St, T: (058) 527 022, F: (058) 525 582.

Further north again, at around 50km from Nha Trang sits the idealic Whale Island, Jungle Beach and Doc Let.

Out off the coast of the Hon Gom peninsula, Whale Island is an isolated eco-venue. Bungalows here are on the beach in a relatively wild, untamed environment. The whole place is very eco-friendly -- the main draw however is the location and the activities including fantastic scuba diving & snorkelling, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. Accommodation starts at US$140 for one night, US$210 for two (includes full board, transfers from Nha Trang -- twin share), so it's not cheap -- despite being very basic, costs a fair bit, but it does include three meals and transfer from Nha Trang airport. Drop into their office in Nha Trang city at 2 Me Linh St, T: (058) 513 871 for more information, or see the Whale Island website.

Doc Let and Jungle Beach are about 15km apart, but they are both in Ninh Tinh, which doesn't really have a bustling 'downtown' area. The nearest small city is Ninh Hoa, about 25km away and the internationally-recognised birthplace of Nem Nuong (grilled pork and vegetables wrapped in rice paper and dipped in peanut sauce). But there is no reason to visit here. All the services you need can be found closer to the beach somewhere within Ninh Tinh.

We looked for a good reason to head into Ninh Hoa, 4km before the turnoff to Doc Let and Jungle Beach, but we didn't come up with much. It's a quaint little town with some nice architecture, and while it's the birthplace of Nem Nuong, what they offer here is no better or worse than the Nem Nuong elsewhere.

One thing you can do if you're at the Jungle Beach is visit the Doc Let Beach Resort. We can't enthusiastically recommend staying here, but you can enter the resort for 10,000 VND even if you're not. The beach isn't nearly as nice as the one at 'The Jungle,' especially with the plastic bags sloshing around in the water like jelly-fish, but it's a thoroughly Vietnamese social scene that makes for a nice afternoon nevertheless. The beach is lined with dinning salas where you can chow down on seafood, and, of course, Nem Nuong. There's also a decent swimming pool here you can use for an extra 15,000 VND.

Otherwise, the hillside near the Jungle Beach is good for a hike with a nearly 100 percent change of spotting one of the Black Langurs. The jungle is dense and gets very toasty, so plan wisely and know your limits. The folks at the Jungle Beach will give you directions, though they don't usually lead tours anymore. Sylvio can also fill you in on some waterfalls and a hot spring in the area if you have your own transport.

Bac Ha travel guide

Bac Ha travel guide
It's something of a shame that few tourists venture beyond Sapa, because to the east of Lao Cai city lies the other half of the province. The ground soars upwards again to the peaks of the Chay River Massif, where the town of Bac Ha is to be found, 66 kilometres by road.

Bac Ha, at 700 metres above sea level, is a 'little Sapa', and while it's much less developed for tourism, it's in an ideal location for off-the-beaten-track treks to visit colourful weekly markets. The Can Cau and Bac Ha markets in particular feature local scenes that have been going on every week for generations, where cattle, horses, goats and dogs are bought and sold, as well as many traditional goods like saddles plus elaborate textiles, handbags and other trinkets made by the local tribespeople, the Flower Hmong. Their intricately woven daily costume is one of the main drawing points in itself. This is an incredibly beautiful part of Vietnam. Classic central package 5 days

It's a very convenient place to explore the surrounds, and basing yourself here rather than Sapa will knock off about three hours of travel time each way on a daytrip to most of the local weekly markets. And, at less than half the altitude of Sapa, the weather here is likely to be more clement in winter months, with an average year-round temperature of 19 degrees Celsius (4 degrees, on average, warmer).  VAT PHOU CRUISE, UNIQUE CRUISE ON THE MEKONG RIVER IN LAOS

But don't expect any pizzas or breathtaking mountain views. Bac Ha is still, first and foremost, a local market town, and the tourist industry is only being added on, wherever it fits in. This is of course part of the attraction — although expect to still be bothered by H'mong hawkers.

The town gets a weekly assault of tourists at mid-morning on Sunday as daytrippers arrive from Hanoi to visit Bac Ha market. Those with time arrive on Saturday, either from Can Cau market or Lao Cai, and stay over to visit the market early the next morning: it's at its best before 09:00 although does carry on until lunchtime.
Bac Ha travel guide
Bac Ha travel guide

There are some good accommodation options and it is possible to avoid the tourist orientated restaurants and find local food places. There are also some less-travelled trekking and homestay trips available in the area, with visits to a variety of ethnic villages, particularly the Flower H'mong. About half the tribes in the area are H'mong, with the rest being Tay, Dzao, Tu Zi, Nung, Phula, La Chi and Lo Lo, among others.

There's very little to do in Bac Ha itself if you're settling in for the night. Market days are party days for the H'mong men, so you might be able to find a cluster of thoroughly pickled blokes to join in with, and let them rail on at you in an incomprehensible patois of Vietnamese, Chinese and Flower H'mong. If that's not your scene, bring a good book.

Orientation
With no banking for foreigners in Bac Ha make sure you bring enough cash to get you through. There is a post office and internet is available at some of the hotels but Bac Ha is not a good place to handle travel logistics, so make sure you have all your ducks in a row before arriving.

Buses back to Lao Cai, which is where most visitors head, leave from outside the temple early morning and afternoon. Or speak to your hotel or Mr Nghe at Green Sapa tour who will likely be able to arrange a pick up.

What to see in Hue

What to see in Hue
Hue is a pretty city, criss-crossed by dozens of bridges, lakes, moats and canals. On the river’s north bank is the ancient imperial citadel and residential areas, while the new commercial area, the old French quarter and the hotel district are all on the south bank. Further south are several tombs that belong to the emperors of the Nguyen dynasty.

Kinh Thanh - the Citadel

On the northern side of the Perfume River, Hue’s Citadel (Kinh Thanh) covers some 520 hectares (1,285 acres) and is enclosed by a wall made of stone, brick and earth and measuring 8 metres (26ft) high and 20 metres (65ft) thick. Centre Vietnam tours

Entry to the Citadel is by way of 10 fortified gates, each of which is reached by a low, arched stone bridge across the moat. In imperial times a cannon would sound at 5am and 9pm to mark the opening and closing of the gates. The area within the Citadel comprises three enclosures, the first of which was formerly used to accommodate various royal ministries and which today constitutes a pleasant area of parks, gardens and quiet residential districts. Here may be found the Sung Than Cong (Nine Deities Cannons), kept in buildings flanking the gates on either side of the Flag Tower. 5 best cruises in Halong Bay

Yellow City
A second moat and defensive wall within the Citadel guard the Hoang Thanh (Yellow City), deliberately modelled on the Forbidden City in Beijing. This inner city has four gates, the chief of which is called Cua Ngo Mon (Meridian Gate, also known as the Noon Gate). This majestic structure, built during the reign of Emperor Minh Mang in 1833, is among the finest surviving examples of Nguyen architecture. The central entrance, reserved exclusively for the emperor, is flanked by smaller passages for the use of mandarins and court officials; these in turn are flanked by two much wider passages intended for the royal elephants. Above the Cua Ngo Mon rises Five Phoenix Watchtower where the emperor sat in state during important ceremonies. 2 days to the Floating Markets

Beyond the Ngo Mon Gate, Kim Thuy Kieu (Bridge of Golden Waters), leads between lotus-filled ponds to Dien Thai Hoa (Palace of Supreme Harmony). This was the throne room of the Nguyen Kings, and is the best preserved of Hue’s surviving palaces. Built by Gia Long in 1805, its yellow-tiled roof is supported by 80 massive wooden columns, lacquered a deep red and decorated with imperial golden dragons.

Forbidden Purple City
Immediately behind the throne room, Dai Cung Mon (Great Golden Gate) once led through to Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Purple City). This used to be the sole preserve of the emperor, his queen, his many concubines and female palace servants. No man but the king could set foot here on pain of death – imperial sons were banished when they reached puberty, and the only non-females permitted within the inner sanctum were palace eunuchs. In imperial times the Purple City consisted of more than 60 buildings arranged around 20 courtyards, but it was seriously damaged by fire in 1947 and all but destroyed during the Tet Offensive of 1968. Restoration work, based on surviving photographs, plans and some degree of imagination, was begun in the mid-1990s and is now well under way.

Just southwest of the Forbidden Purple City is an area with numerous temples and smaller palaces. Cuong Dien Tho (Dien Tho Palace) was the traditional residence of various queen mothers and contains more than 20 structures, including the lovely Truong Du ?Pavilion, nestled against a small lotus pond. Completely restored, the magnificent Hien Lam Cac (Pavilion of Splendour), towers above the Cuu Dinh (Nine Dynastic Urns). The urns, cast during Minh Mang’s reign, are decorated with motifs of nature ?and daily life, dragons and historic events.

Perfume River

Any visit to Hue should certainly include a boat trip on the beautiful Perfume River. Boats are readily available for hire, either for a relaxing trip in the vicinity of Hue, or for a longer journey upstream to the tombs of Minh Mang and Gia Long. Night journeys on the river with musical ensembles playing traditional court music can be arranged and are an enchanting experience.

The Imperial Tombs

Scattered across the countryside to the south and west of the city, the Tombs of the Nguyen Emperors are, together with the Citadel, Hue’s greatest attraction. These seven tombs, all of which have features of outstanding architectural merit, are often strikingly different.

Son La travel guide

Son La travel guide
Remote and mountainous Son La province stretches along Vietnam's south-western border with Laos and is bisected by the Song Da river which flows down through the province eventually emptying into the large reservoir in Hoa Binh province.

Characterised by a rugged, yet breathtaking, mountainous landscape, the steep slopes of Son La's valleys are layered in hundreds of stepped rice terraces, while the lush valley bases are home to small and often very isolated farming villages. With a substantial population of minority groups, you'll not need to look far to find people living a very traditional lifestyle well away from the hustle and bustle of Vietnam's larger, more urbanised centres.Northwest Vietnam tours.

For the vast majority of visitors, Son La is but a series of slow vistas taken out of a minibus window as they make their long winding trip from Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu and while the same-named provincial capital holds little of touristic value, it's a classic the pleasure is all in the getting there type destination.  3 Halong Luxury Cruises

There are far less spectacular provinces in which to lose a day or two than Son La, and, if you're travelling under their own steam, particularly by motorbike, Son La holds terrific potential with ample side-roads and off-the-main-road villages and valleys you can explore. luxury cruises in Mekong River

The sleepy provincial capital of Son La itself is set at the halfway point between Hanoi and Dien Bien Phu. It was once the site of a sizeable French garrison during the French war, but today, aside from the ruins of the prison, the only evidence the French ever made it here is the baguettes and rich strong coffee. A mid-sized town, the provincial capital is split in two by a small estuary, the fertile banks of which are given over to small-scale farming.

For a town of little note, really the only point of interest here is the ruins of the French prison, so most visitors give Son La a single night's stay before continuing on towards Dien Bien Phu or Hanoi.

Orientation
Highway 6 is called Truong Chinh in town, and Phuong Quyet Tam further out by the bus station. It veers sharply to the west as it hits the town centre, and it then called Dien Bien Phu. The road on the west side of the river is To Hieu, on the northern stretch of which you'll find 26/8 Street by the park, with access to the lookout point. On the east side, the road is Chu Van Thinh. They're connected via two bridges — Cau Trang, on Dien Bien Phu, and Cau Day Vang a bit to the north. There's a small unnamed bridge further north. If you're looking for Nguyen Luong Bang, head to the Highway 6 roundabout, and it branches off to the east.
There are a number of ATMs around town, with a BIDV bank on To Hieu. Long distance phone services and Western Union are available at the post office. It's on To Hieu just south of the Day Vang bridge road.
